Next ritual...Aha.."Coffee.." & Whats news today ?

Posted by
Sunder (Chennai, India) on 19 August 2010 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

Try as I might, I could not get the cup and coffee pot steaming as I wanted...
Tried many shots/angles including a dark backdrop..
After 3 pots of coffee , plenty of frustrations, some swear words and a spent man...this is the best I could come up with...
I found the sunlight does not like steam.and hence capture of the morning mood becomes difficult...
Would gratefully welcome ideas to capture a steaming cup of the morning coffee, which was my idea today...
Must hurry...I'm late !!!

Alun from cheshire, United Kingdom

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

This is not a bad framing at all :)
Did you use a tripod? What lenses did you try?
Often it's just a question of going back one step or two :)

19 Aug 2010 5:39am

@Paco Díaz: Thank you, Paco..
Yes I did use a tripod..
I used the Canon Kit lens 18 - 55 mm..
Yes , I did try going back as well..no such luck...
Maybe ,as Don suggested, probably if shot in a cold room, steam would have been more apparent..
Cold room in Chennai , Indiain August ..NEVER..

Don from spokane, United States

I like the picture you finally decided on. Steam is tricky...usually the room used to shoot is not cold enough...in my limited experience! ;-)

19 Aug 2010 2:05pm

@Don: Thanks a lot Don for your comment and advice.
Yes, I should try in a cold room.
But a cold room in Chennai, India in August is IMPOSSIBLE.
Maybe i shall try in an A/c room...
However, I did console myself saying that the condensation of the steam in the coffee pot was enough for me...

Dilwenn from Bordeaux, France

Il est tard maintenant pour boire le café, je repasserai demain matin. Sans sucre :)

SOUL AFLAME from The bosom of Mother Nature, United Kingdom

A nice composition here, and you've got me wanting a cup! Steam is notopriously difficult to capture because you need a dark background, and also it must be backlit as the light coming through the steam actually shows it on the photograph. For example with this shot, you would need an angle that shows the steam against a black wall/curtain/piece of material etc. You'd then preferably need at least one flash unit, and a dedicated second slave flash unit fired from a different angle to produce the light that shows the steam to it's fullest.

I shot a steaming fence in Canada recently in the early morning sun, and to my naked eye the steam off the wood from the early dew weas incredible, but with the wrong angle and no backlight, my photos barely captured the steam. It's fun trying though isn't it.
