"Kancheepuram " Silk Saree ...

Posted by
Sunder (Chennai, India) on 1 October 2010 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

These "Kancheepuram" or "Kancheevaram" Silk sarees are the sarees of choice for wedding, social and religious occasions.

Traditionally, it is also handed down generations from mother to daughter..and can be considered a "heirloom" and thus has great SENTIMENTAL values and are treasured by many with very FOND memories of their mothers/ancestors.

The more extensive the "Jhari" or "Zari" ( borders made of woven golden thread) the more expensive the saree.

These sarees are individually hand woven and takes about a week or even longer to weave one saree...

I’ve been away for a few days and I see I missed some wonderful photos! This series on fabric is fascinating! The colors are wondrous and the lighting you have chosen to use makes them glow. It’s a shame the weavers, who are definitely skilled at the task, do not get more $$$ for their creativity, hard work and devotion to their craft. You are a good teacher Sunder!

Christel from Köln, Germany

Good evening Sunder,
The silk, the pattern and the gloss are beautiful and look very elegant in presentation. 5 stars *****
In Cologne, many Indians live with their families. I often admire the clothes of women. They look very pretty and graceful in it. Thanks for the interesting information. This work is more than admirable. In school I learned in my childhood that there is a butterfly called the silkworm. From the butterfly you get the silk threads. I wish you a nice weekend and all the best including your family. Thanks for all your nice comments.
Sincerely Christel
