This is the front elevation of the typical rural house in Thanjavur district. Tamil Nadu, South India.
The passageway leads to a the Main Door (Vaasarpadi in Tamil) which has intricately carved designs. The rectangular designs on either side of the door are excavations in the wall called "Maadam" in which- lamps are placed.
On either side of the passageway is a raised platform called " Thinnai"with pillars...Hence these houses are called "Thinnai Veedu" ( thinnai - houses)
Inside, one can see the brightly sunlit courtyard and subsequently the backdoor- similar wooden door(Kollai Vaasarpadi) but not so intricately dsigned...and the garden in the backyard.
My shot tomorrow which shows the Thinnai in greater detail will conclude my series on these houses...
