Standard Gauge Railway tracks

Posted by
Sunder (Chennai, India) on 3 December 2010 in Transportation and Portfolio.

Railways were first introduced to India in 1853.

Now, the Indian Railways ( IR) is the largest employer in India and is one of the world's largest commercial or utility employers, with more than 1.6 million employees.

It has the world's fourth largest railway network after that of the United States, Russia and China.

Indian Railways has more than 64,015 kilometres (39,777 mi) of track and 6,909 stations.

The railways traverse the length and breadth of the country and carry over 20 million passengers and 2 million tons of freight daily.

As to rolling stock, IR owns over 200,000 (freight) wagons, 50,000 coaches and 8,000 locomotives. Click here for more details....

And from my experience many a nation could learn from the way they are run, I was most impressed travelling through out Rajasthan. The national pride was evident, understandably with the immense employment they give. I have enjoyed your series it has brought back many happy memories
