Valluvar Kottam - Chariot Wheel

Posted by
Sunder (Chennai, India) on 18 December 2010 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

This is a close up of the chariot wheel seen in yesterdays post .

The Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar is known for his 1330 couplets "Thirukkural".
Thjirukkurral has been translated in numerous languages.
This Wkipedia page offers more information.

Would this chariot have ever moved? It looks so heavy! The wheel seems to be made of marble! If it did move, how many people were needed to drag it?

18 Dec 2010 7:33am

@CElliottUK: As you rightly said it is made of marble. This model has been stationary and never moved. However, this is a replica of the temple chariot ( temple car) of Thiruvarur, well known for a festival where the chariot on wheels is actually pulled by huge number of people( in hundreds) - The thing to note here is the co-ordination involved amongst the people in getting this mega structure moving!!
